Think that tan looks good on you? A suntan is actually the skin’s reaction to an injury inflicted by ultraviolet light rays. Here are some facts about protecting yourself.

“Broad spectrum” sunscreens are best.

Use sunscreen products that offer protection against both ultraviolet B (UVB) light, which is primarily responsible for tanning and burning, and ultraviolet A (UVA) light, which penetrates deeper into the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using screens with a minimum sun protection factor (SPF) of 15.

A rule of thumb for gauging the sun’s intensity is that the rays are strongest when your shadow is shortest. But to take out the guesswork, you can check the ultraviolet radiation levels in your city daily, courtesy of the Environmental Protection Agency’s UV index.

Sunscreens are not a bulletproof vest.

Sunscreens reduce, but do not prevent, the exposure of your skin to damaging ultraviolet rays. Wearing SPF 15 screen in the sun for 15 minutes is roughly equivalent to spending one minute baking with no protection whatsoever. The zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in total-protection screens (formerly known as sunblocks), by contrast, provide a physical barrier between UV and your skin. If you think cotton T-shirts are the way to go, think again: They provide protection only around SPF 5.

There are over 1 million good reasons to be cautious about sun exposure.

If you’re getting tanned at all, you’re being exposed to UV radiation; and if you’re exposed to UV radiation, you are increasing your risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, representing more cases than prostate, breast, lung, colon, uterus, ovaries and pancreas cancers combined. According to the American Cancer Society, most of the 1 million cases of nonmelanoma skin cancer diagnosed every year are sun-related. ACS estimates that over 62,000 new cases of melanoma, the most serious skin cancer, will be diagnosed in 2006 in the U.S. Though treatment and survival rates are excellent given early detection, melanoma will still claim nearly 8,000 lives this year.

If preventing skin cancer is not enough motivation, there are other benefits to using sunscreen.

Sunscreens help prevent the premature aging of skin from sun exposure; “photoaged” skin tends to be wrinkled and leathery, and has irregular pigmentation. When taking medications that sensitize the skin to sunlight, high SPF sunscreens are helpful though not a total guarantee of protection. Sunscreen also prevents freckles.

Small children need extra protection.

“Children under the age of 6 months have very sensitive skin, and sunscreens are potentially irritating to them,” says Dr. Sandra Read, a dermatologist in Washington, D.C. “They are better protected by staying out of the sun, seeking shade, avoiding peak hours of sunlight, and using protective clothing such as hats and long sleeves.” Dr. Read also warns that adults and children should not be fooled by an overcast day, since a full 80 percent of the sun’s radiation still penetrates the clouds.

People with dark skin need sunscreen, too.

“Having more of that pigment, or melanin, is like having a little bit of sunscreen in your skin,” says Dr. Read. “While it may help protect you from an acute burn, it does not protect you from skin cancer or from photoaging. People say, ‘I have a base tan—I’m protected.’ What are you protected from? You might not get a painful first-degree burn, but you’re going to be out in the sun more, so you’re more susceptible to skin cancer.”

The key ingredient of many sunscreens is PABA, or para-aminobenzoic acid, which protects the skin by absorbing ultraviolet light. But PABA has to bind to the skin to be fully effective, and that takes about half an hour once the screen has been applied.Most sunscreens aren’t effective until about 30 minutes after application.

I just had an AHA! moment tonight. It was in the middle of my Yoga class and something just clicked. I felt completely enlightened, engaged and in tune with my body. After my Yoga class I watched the documentary Yoga Woman (which I highly recommend) and I felt so inspired and motivated. But why did I have the AHA! moment moments before watching this invigorating documentary? As I reflected on my week to notice what may have led up to my AHA! I realized that many beautiful things happened this week. I practiced Yoga three times this week, I gave up sugar, dairy and wheat as part of my cleanse, I skyped with my homeopathic doctor, I started boot camp with a girlfriend, and not just any friend but a friend who is always encouraging and who makes me laugh so hard. I was on my moon time. I listened to Adele and sang out loud. I began to meditate. I replicated several recipes taught to me from my Aunty B who was the yogiest of them all. Pretty amazing week, coincidentally???? Whatever it was, whoever it was, whenever it was, THANK.YOU.THANK.YOU. I feel rejuvenated and ready to commit to being the healthiest me I can be!!!!!

It seems when you are a child you have infinite capacity and capability to dream. As we grow older it is not the ability to dream we lose, but the power to believe that our outlandish dreams will actually come true. We no longer shoot for the stars, but rather aim lower, become more practical and realistic in our endeavors. Our dreams transform in to more pragmatic goals that we spend all our time trying to achieve. Overtime we grow and mature and seem to lose the little child within us. In her blog, Prescriptions for Life, Dr. Susan Biali recently commented on the importance of maintaining a relationship with your inner child. The wellness expert and longtime blogger for Psychology Today draws on her own personal experiences on dealing with depression and how reconnecting with her "brilliant, no-limits mini-[me]" saved her life. As kids we lived carefree and did what we loved "before society and external influences start[ed] telling [us] who [we] should be". The more scientists study garlic, the more benefits they find come from eating it. For instance, did you know garlic can not only prevent cancer, but may also be able to help treat it? There are many benefits in this great little food and the cancer fighting ability is a big plus ion my book. I am sure that I don’t need to tell you why. :)

Scientists have done various studies to determine why garlic can fight cancer so well. The main cancer fighting compound in garlic is a chemical called allicin. Allicin is what gives garlic its distinct smell; it also protects the garlic plant from organisms that may attack it. Allicin isnt the only anti-cancer chemical in garlic. Garlic also contains allicin-derived compounds, as well as other chemicals that arent even related to allicin. Thats what makes garlic so special; it contains a whole slew of compounds to fight off cancer and help keep you healthy.

If we compare cultures that have large amounts of garlic in their diet to cultures that get very little of these foods, we find that the cultures with higher garlic intake have less incidence of cancer. While we cannot definitively say that garlic is the cause of this difference, other studies have shown its preventative power. Studies have found increased garlic intake to be associate with a decreased chance of colon and stomach cancers. Another study found the garlic prevented rats from being purposely given esophageal cancer. We also know that garlic helps fight a wide variety of infectious diseases. This means out immune system has to fight microorganisms less and can focus on preventing cancer cells from growing.

There have been many studies in humans and animals that show garlic to help not only with preventing cancer, but also in helping to treat it. It is considered most effective in fighting cancer of the stomach and esophagus because it helps to lower nitrite levels. Garlic has been proven to lower the death rate in stomachcancer patients. In studies of general cancer patients, garlic was found to cut tumor size in half in one study, and produce significant improvements of symptoms in over two-thirds of the patients in another study. While garlic should not be your only weapon in battling cancer, it can be a powerful tool to give you a leg-up in the fight.

Te benefits of garlic do depend on what kind of garlic you eat and how it is prepared. Most studies have found garlic to be equally effective whether it is raw or cooked; however, if you cook the garlic, wait at least 15 minutes after peeling before you cook it. You can also get the benefits from garlic power or compressedgarlic oil. Dont rely on aged or spray dried garlic; they dont have the same benefits.

If used properly and regularly, garlic can be a powerful tool in preventing or treating various cancers.

Volunteering is good for your mind and body

How Spirituality Affects Your Health

Recent studies have shown that spirituality could be as important as fitness or nutritionfor your health. Another point about spirituality is that we now know that prayer, meditation, imagery and visualization all help us to heal. When other people pray for us the positive energy can manifest positive results for us.

It’s no secret that exercise can help prevent disease. What is new is that certain physical activities, as Pilates, can help prevent and even overcome some types of cancer.

Practicing relaxed sports help both prevent and cope with cancer as well as keep a good health condition once it’s overcome.  Pilates can teach you how to breathe and relax so as to prevent the stress caused by cancer, the uncertainty of exam results, and the emotional changes it produces.

For women with breast cancer it’s highly recommended the practice of Pilates because it increases flexibility and elasticity of tissues, and prevents patients develop other conditions such as osteoporosis.

Pilates exercises help improve muscle tone that results damaged by certain aggressive cancer treatments. Muscle endurance exercises benefit bone density and have been proven to improve life quality of cancer patients and people with limited mobility.

Every doctor learned back in medical school all about Otto Warburg's discovery; a discovery of humongous proportions, because way back in the thirties Otto discovered the main biochemical cause of cancer, or what differentiates a cancer cell from a normal, healthy cell. So big a discovery was this, that Otto Warburg was awarded the Nobel Prize.
Cancer has only one prime cause. It is the replacement of normal oxygen respiration of the body's cells by an anaerobic [i.e., oxygen-deficient] cell respiration. -Dr. Otto Warburg
But what else does Warburg's discovery tell us. First off, it tells us that cancer metabolizes much differently than normal cells. Normal cells need oxygen. Cancer cells despise oxygen. In fact, oxygen therapy is a favorite among many of the alternative clinics we've researched.
Another thing this tells us is that cancer metabolizes through a process of fermentation.
If you've ever made wine, you'll know that fermentation requires sugar.
The metabolism of cancer is approximately 8 times greater than the metabolism of normal cells.
Okay, so here is what we can put together knowing the above: The body is constantly overworked trying to feed this cancer. The cancer is constantly on the verge starvation and thus constantly asking the body to feed it. When the food supply is cut off, the cancer begins to starve unless it can make the body produce sugar to feed itself.
The wasting syndrome, cachexia, is the body producing sugar from proteins (you heard it right, not from carbohydrates or fats, but from proteins) in a process called glycogenesis. This sugar feeds the cancer. The body finally dies of starvation, trying to feed the cancer.
Now, knowing that one's cancer needs sugar, does it make sense to feed it sugar? Does it make sense to have a high carbohydrate diet?
The reason Food Therapies for cancer even exist today (beyond the fact that they work) is because someone once saw the connection between sugar and cancer. There are many food therapies, but not a single one allows many foods high in carbohydrates and not a single one allows sugars, BECAUSE SUGAR FEEDS CANCER.

For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

The funds raised in Canada support the number one male cancer, prostate cancer.

The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by Movember and our men’s health partner, Prostate Cancer Canada. Movember - a global movement

Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.1 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate, with formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and Ireland. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health cause across the globe, from Russia to Dubai, Hong Kong to Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai, and everywhere in between.

No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, getting them to act on that knowledge thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

In 2010, nearly 119,000 Canadian Mo Bros and Mo Sistas got on board, raising $22.3 million CAD.

Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health each year.

This has been an ongoing debate in our household for the last four years. So does Milk really do a body good? I really hoped so because Lowen and Jive LOVE milk. So this is the what I found online. Children should be drinking milk, whole milk until they are two. "They need the fat for nerve and brain development," says Frank Greer, M.D., chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics's Committee on Nutrition. Switching to soy milk is an option however it is low in fat so you will need to supplement for the lack of fats.

According to the National Dairy Council, milk is filled with nine essential nutrients that benefit our health:

Calcium: Builds healthy bones and teeth; maintains bone mass
Protein: Serves as a source of energy; builds/repairs muscle tissue
Potassium: Helps maintain a healthy blood pressure
Phosphorus: Helps strengthen bones and generate energy
Vitamin D: Helps maintain bones
Vitamin B12: Maintains healthy red blood cells and nerve tissue
Vitamin A: Maintains the immune system; helps maintain normal vision and skin
Riboflavin (B2): Converts food into energy
Niacin: Metabolizes sugars and fatty acids

In other words, milk packs quite a punch when it comes to nutrition—and you don't have to drink a gallon to reap the benefits, the National Dairy Council says. In fact, the council says that just one 8-ounce glass of milk provides the same amount of vitamin D you'd get from 3.5 ounces of cooked salmon, as much calcium as 2 1/4 cups of broccoli, as much potassium as a small banana, as much vitamin A as two baby carrots and as much phosphorus as a cup of kidney beans!

What about when they are sick? Should we hold off the milk?

Milk and mucus

Some people think that cows' milk produces mucus and that they should not give it to their children when they have a cold.
Research shows that drinking milk does not increase mucus.
Milk has a creamy feel and tends to leave a soft, sticky coating in the mouth and throat. This is not mucus and usually only lasts a short while and does no harm.
It is important that children continue to have healthy diets when they have a cold.
If your children do not want to drink milk when they have a cold try other dairy foods like yoghurt or cheese or flavoured milk iceblocks and the other suggestions in this topic.

Hundreds of ailments can result from too-little iron, and milk consumption has been shown to cause intestinal bleeding, which ultimately results in lowering one's hemoglobin count. The result: weakness, depression, irritability. The cure: NOTMILK.

Potato chips are very high in fat, which can cause many health problems. It's recommended that you keep your dietary fat level at 15% of your calories or below – which is nigh-on impossible to do while still eating potato chips. Maybe if you ate them once a week and then had no fat for the rest of the week. But for those lacking in self control, perhaps the answer is just not to eat them.

The salt in potato chips is harmful too. It can irritate your digestive system in its crystalline form, and is of course somewhat harmful in itself.

The crunchy texture and high starch of potato chips make them hard on the digestive system. If you have them, it's best to combine them with lots of salad or vegetables to ensure an easier digestive process.

Finally potato chips are bad because they have been cooked at very high temperatures, which causes large-scale destruction of the nutrients in the food and brings about toxic chemicals such as AGEs.
